Description

DEFINITION: Under close supervision of the lead mechanic, maintains and repairs buses, vehicles and mechanical equipment for the safe transportation of students and staff of the Sunnyside Unified School District.  

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

TASKS:
Maintains and repairs buses, vehicles and equipment; repairs brakes, air conditioners, transmissions, engines, radiators, fuel systems, wheel chair lifts and restraints, tractors, mowers and other equipment; replaces windows; assures buses are working properly and ready for routes; may need to perform jump starts, brake adjustments, change light bulbs and repair tires before buses can be used in the morning.
 
Completes paperwork and work order slips; cleans and secures surrounding work area; responds to emergency calls or requests; inspects buses, vehicles and equipment and performs preventative maintenance; and performs related duties as assigned.
 
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS:
Knowledge of District policies and procedures.
Knowledge of shop and parts manuals.
Knowledge of maintenance and repair on vehicles, buses and mechanical equipment.
Skill in solving work orders or repairing maintenance problems.
Skill in maintaining a safe working environment.
Skill in following oral and written instructions.
Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
 
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Work is performed in indoor and outdoor environments. Work requires frequent driving, walking, standing, sitting, bending and lifting up to 50 pounds. May be exposed to moving or dangerous equipment, extreme weather conditions, toxic fumes and chemicals and infectious diseases. 
 
QUALIFICATIONS: High School Diploma or equivalent, and two (2) years mechanical work experience.
Must pass district administered examination with a score of 70 or greater.  Must possess an Arizona driver license with class B CDL certification. Additional certifications may also be required as specified by the District.
 
Depending on the needs of the District, some incumbents in this class must be able to demonstrate fluency in both Spanish and English as a condition of employment.
