Position Title: Middle School Spanish Teacher

Location: Southampton County Public Schools

Reports To: Principal

Job Summary: The Middle School Spanish Teacher is responsible for providing high-quality instruction in the Spanish language to middle school students. This role involves developing and delivering engaging lessons, promoting language acquisition and cultural understanding, and creating a supportive and dynamic learning environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Instructional Planning and Delivery:

  • Develop and implement a Spanish curriculum that aligns with state and national standards.
  • Provide instruction in Spanish language skills, including listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
  • Utilize a variety of teaching methods, such as interactive activities, multimedia resources, and cultural immersion experiences, to engage students and enhance language acquisition.
  • Student Assessment and Progress Monitoring:

    • Assess and evaluate student performance through tests, quizzes, assignments, projects, and oral presentations.
    • Monitor and document student progress, providing timely feedback and support to address academic needs and promote growth.
    • Adjust instructional strategies and interventions based on assessment data and individual student needs.
  • Curriculum Development and Enhancement:

    • Develop and update instructional materials, lesson plans, and resources to enhance the Spanish curriculum.
    • Incorporate technology and innovative teaching practices into the curriculum to provide engaging and relevant learning experiences.
    • Design and implement enrichment activities and cultural projects to extend learning opportunities for advanced students.
  • Cultural Awareness and Engagement:

    • Promote cultural understanding and appreciation of Spanish-speaking countries and cultures.
    • Integrate cultural elements, such as traditions, customs, and current events, into lessons to provide a comprehensive language learning experience.
    • Organize and participate in cultural events, language clubs, and exchange programs to enrich students' learning experiences.
  • Classroom Management and Support:

    • Create and maintain a positive, organized, and inclusive classroom environment that encourages student participation and fosters a love of the Spanish language.
    • Implement and enforce classroom rules and procedures to ensure a safe and productive learning environment.
    • Address and manage behavioral issues in a fair and consistent manner, providing support to help students develop self-regulation skills.
  • Student Engagement and Support:

    • Provide additional support and resources to students who need extra help or enrichment in learning Spanish.
    • Foster a supportive and respectful classroom atmosphere that promotes student engagement and collaboration.
    • Address students' academic and emotional needs, and provide guidance and support as needed.
  • Collaboration and Communication:

    • Collaborate with colleagues, including special education teachers and other subject-area teachers, to support students’ diverse needs and ensure a cohesive educational experience.
    • Communicate regularly with parents and guardians regarding student progress, achievements, and areas for improvement.
    • Participate in parent-teacher conferences, school meetings, and other events to build strong relationships with families.
  • Professional Development and Growth:

    • Stay current with advancements in language education, instructional strategies, and educational technology through professional development.
    • Share knowledge and expertise with colleagues, contributing to the development of school-wide strategies for language instruction.
    • Engage in ongoing self-reflection and seek opportunities to enhance teaching practices and instructional effectiveness.
  • Administrative Tasks:

    • Maintain accurate records of student grades, attendance, and other necessary documentation.
    • Prepare and submit reports, lesson plans, and other required paperwork in a timely manner.
    • Manage classroom supplies and resources, ensuring they are used effectively and efficiently.

    Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Spanish, Education, or a related field.
    • Valid state teaching certification in Spanish or secondary education.
    • Proficiency in Spanish, with strong verbal and written communication skills.
    • Previous experience teaching Spanish at the middle school level preferred.
    • Strong knowledge of language acquisition principles, instructional strategies, and best practices in education.
    • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to work effectively with students, families, and colleagues.
    • Proficiency in using educational technology and language learning resources.

    Physical Requirements:

    • Ability to stand, sit, and move around for extended periods.
    • Capacity to lift and carry up to 25 pounds of educational materials.
    • Ability to perform tasks involving manual labor, such as setting up classroom activities and managing supplies.

    Work Environment:

    • Work is performed in a classroom setting.
    • Occasional evening or weekend work may be required for school functions and professional development.
