JOB TITLE:                     Behavior Support Paraprofessional 

DEPARTMENT:               Special Services

REPORTS TO:                Principal

FLSA STATUS:               Non-exempt

CONTRACT STATUS:    Full-time / 180 days

SALARY SCHEDULE:    Paraprofessional II

SUMMARY:  Provides support to site staff and District Behavior Specialists and gives assistance to students with individual physical, social, academic, behavioral and other needs.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: these statements are intended to describe the responsibilities assigned to this position and are not intended to represent an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties and skills required.

 
  1. Under the direction of the District Behavior Specialist, provide behavior supports and interventions to students in 1:1 and group settings.

  2. Work with general education students and students with varying disabilities (autism, ADHD, developmental disabilities, etc.) and their teachers to support behavior interventions/strategies in the classroom setting.

  3. Consistent implementation of environmental behavior interventions.

  4. Follows prescribed behavioral skill acquisition and behavior reduction protocols as instructed by the District Behavior Specialist. 

  5. Collects data and provides ongoing monitoring of Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP).

  6. Effectively communicate with staff members and District Behavior Specialists regarding student progress.

  7. Provides support for integration and success in the classroom setting.

  8. Accompanies and assists students with transition activities in the classroom and school setting. 

  9. Utilizes safe and appropriate procedures when working with students.

  10. Follows the legal and ethical standards of confidentiality of information.

  11. Develops cooperative and functional relationships with district staff and the public; maintains consistent and punctual attendance; ensures job responsibilities are met competently and within established deadlines.

  12. Participates in professional development and other training programs, as required.

  13. All other duties as assigned by the administrator.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

 
  1. High School Diploma or equivalent

  2. Associate Degree or higher OR 48 hours of college credit OR passed the ParaPRo (paraprofessional test) OR passed the OGET (Oklahoma General Education Test) OR passed the WorkKey Test *District will work with individuals to meet this qualification.

  3. Yearly CPR, First Aid, and CPI certification. *Provided by the district.

  4. 6 hours of continuing education per year to maintain paraprofessional certification from the State of Oklahoma. *Provided by the district.

  5. Paraprofessional/Assistant Training *Provided by the district.

  6. Behavior Technician Training *Provided by the district.

  7. Generally will have at least one year's experience in a closely related field.

 

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:  Basic knowledge of disabilities. Computer literate; excellent written and oral communication ability; strong knowledge of rules, regulations, policies and laws applicable to education and special education.  Ability to follow all district policies and procedures.  Ability to work independently, displaying initiative and enthusiasm for the tasks being done.  Demonstrating strong communication skills, orally and in writing, with faculty, staff, team members, and administrators.  Ability to work without supervision, and work as a team player.  Ability to document records accurately.  Ability to manage confidential information in a manner that respects students, families, and employees.  Ability to listen effectively.  

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS:  Ability to read, analyze, and interpret English.   Ability to effectively communicate with supervisor, school personnel, and co-workers.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:  Ability to perform basic math functions such as addition and subtraction.

 

REASONING ABILITY:  Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out written and oral instructions.  Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Will require lifting of students for proper positioning to prevent deformity and enhance comfort and stability, also transferring of students to toilet, floor wedge, bolster ball and other therapeutic equipment.  While performing the duties of this job, you must be able to sit in classroom chairs at a desk for up to an hour at a time.  Frequently walk the hallways the length of the school.

Work environment can at times be very stressful but is usually calm.  There can be many interruptions in routine due to student behavior or making accommodations. Must have their own transportation to sites.
