Description

SPORTS MEDICINE TEACHER AND ATHLETIC TRAINER Secondary-Grades 9-12 SY24/25

Position Purpose 
This position develops and implements an athletic training program and a sports medicine instructional program that will effectively meet the needs of all students.  The Athletic Trainer evaluates and treats sport-related injuries as well as student performance in the classroom.  The Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) is a highly educated and skilled professional specializing in athletic health care.  In cooperation with physicians, allied health professionals and administrative personnel, the ATC functions as an integral member of the athletic health care team in the high school.

Salary: $47,098- $72,855 (Commensurate with Experience)

Position-Specific Responsibilities of the NATABOC Certified Athletic Trainer:
  • Assists with prevention of athletic injuries.
  • Assists with early recognition, evaluation, and care of athletic injuries.
  • Provides assessment of the type of injury, rehabilitation and reconditioning of athletic injuries to minimize the risk of re-injuring.
  • Provides referrals for injured athletes to appropriate medical professionals when necessary
  • Manages the health care administration including medical record keeping, documentation and reporting.
  • Establishes policies and procedures related to athletic training.
  • Oversees the budget and inventory of the athletic training program.
  • Provides education and training to coaches, parents, and student athletes.
  • Provides supervision and training of student assistants.
  • Provides supervision of athletic practices and athletic home events.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of the Virginia High School League rules and regulations pertaining to athletics.
  • Knowledge of the subject being taught.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with the total staff and medical health care professionals.
  • Ability to relate positively to parents and other community representatives.
  • Ability to demonstrate appropriate use of written and verbal communication; thorough knowledge of English grammar and usage.
  • Ability to demonstrate effective time management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to demonstrate classroom management strategies appropriate to the learning situation.
  • Ability to assess individual needs and performance.
  • Ability to address criticism in an appropriate manner and develop constructive outcomes.
  • Ability to practice appropriate protocols in the field of athletic training.
Additional Duties
This position will require after student school day duties, for this a supplement may be avaiable to the teacher.
Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

  •  Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time.

  • Physical ability to lift up to 25 pounds, bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, walk and reach overhead.

Travel Requirements
Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required. 

Work Schedule
Standard teacher work schedule as set forth in the Teachers' Contract and additional after hours sports related duties.
 

Qualifications/Certification/License:

  • Bachelor's Degree in applicable field of education from an accredited college or university.
  • Must hold current CPR/First Aid Certification.
  • Must hold National Athletic Trainer's Association Board of Certification (NATABOC) in addition to state licensure eligibility.
  • Hold or be eligible for a valid teaching license which meets Commonwealth of Virginia requirements with specific endorsement in the area to which assigned.
Experience
Successful prior teaching experience for the appropriate grade level and/or subject is a plus.
