Secondary School Librarian Job Description

 

Job Title: Librarian

Credentials: Current Oklahoma Teaching Certificate with endorsements for the appropriate level/subject area.

Education: Master’s degree in Library Science and/or Information Studies.

Training or experience required: Experience as a classroom teacher preferred.

Reports to: Building Principal and Director of Libraries & Instructional Technology

Contract: 200 days

Salary Schedule: Certified Salary Schedule

FLSA Classification: Exempt

 Essential Job Functions:
  • Ensure that all members of the learning community have access to resources that meet a variety of needs and interests through a systematically developed collection within the school and through access to resources outside the school.

  • Assist students and staff in identifying, locating and interpreting information.

  • Provide access to the library throughout the school day, scheduling class visits flexibly to encourage use at the point of need; organize and manage the library facility in a manner that encourages access.

  • Develop and implement policies and procedures which ensure that access to information is not impeded; interpret laws and district policies regarding information.

  • Inform teachers, students, parents and administrators of new materials, equipment and services that meet their information needs.

  • Evaluate library media program needs and communicates to administration.

  • Use technology tools to supplement school resources.

  • Assist in the creation of learning tasks.

  • Connect the school to the global learning community.

  • Provide 24-7 access to library learning commons.

  • Introduce and model technologies, as well as strategies for finding, assessing, using, synthesizing and creating knowledge.

  • Manage the staff, automation, collection development, the program budget, and the physical and virtual spaces.

  • Be able to lift 40 lbs.

  • Participate/facilitate department, grade-level, school and district curriculum development and assessment projects.

  • Offer assistance to teachers in the selection and purchase of instructional materials, and in the use of information resources.

  • Plan cooperatively with teachers to incorporate information skills into the classroom curriculum and to assist teachers in developing resource based units and activities.

  • Provide leadership in assessing, evaluating and implementing information and instructional technologies.

  • Recommend literature to teachers and makes literature available to them to share with their classes.

  • Co-teach with classroom teachers to develop assignments that are matched to district standards.

  • Guide instructional design by working with the classroom teacher to establish learning objectives and goals, and by implementing assessment strategies before, during, and after assigned units of study.

  • Perform applicable functions of classroom teacher.

  • Teach information skills as an integral part of the content and objectives of the school’s curriculum.

  • Jointly plan, co-teach and assess the instruction which incorporates information access and use and communication and technology skills with the classroom curriculum.

  • Provide instruction in the use of technology related to information access, analysis, synthesis, and creation.

  • Use a wide variety of teaching strategies, technologies, and ways of communicating information to ensure that students can access and use all types of information sources.

  • Take a leadership role in promoting and demonstrating the use of technologies with students, teachers and other adults.

  • Encourage students to read for pleasure and motivates their reading through a variety of methods.

  • Empower students to become critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers, skillful researchers, and ethical users of information.

  • Support students’ success.

  • Support reading comprehension skills across all formats.

  • Lead the way in building career, college and life-ready skills throughout the school environment.

  • Demonstrate a willingness to serve as a teacher and a learner who listens to and acts upon good ideas from peers, teachers, and students. 

  • Promotes a culture of literacy.

  • Serves in the roles of  leader, instructional partner, information specialist, teacher and program administrator.

  • Implements the National School Library Standards for Learners, School Librarians, and School Libraries, which are the state and national standards for school librarians. 

 Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

Successful performance of the job requires good customer service/people skills and to handle problems and provide information and technical assistance as requested. It requires complying with safety guidelines and policies to reduce accident or injury to staff or students. It requires following school dress standards, proper attendance or leave policies, and other work-habits concerns for staff. Creativity, initiative and effective problem solving are critical to the success of the position.Help manage the computerization of school district operations. Provide training and support to district staff in the use of administrative computer systems. Perform such tasks to the ultimate benefit of the educational program. An incumbent in this position will utilize discretion, ingenuity and independent judgment due to the complexity of the job. Since there may be several ways to solve a problem, an incumbent is free to choose the solution.
