POSITION:    Reading Specialist - Middle School - (This position is contingent on state funding)

JOB SUMMARY:
 
The Reading Specialist facilitates student success in academic and interpersonal skills through academic courses of study and by implementing district approved curriculum, documenting teaching and student progress/activities/outcomes; addresses specific needs of students; provides a safe and optimal learning environment; and provides feedback to students, parents and administration regarding student progress, expectations, goals, etc. The reading specialist reports to the principal and assistant principal.
 
REQUISITE EDUCATION AND SKILLS:
 
  • Valid Virginia Department of Education license with an endorsement in Reading Specialist, or eligibility to obtain one.
  • A Master’s degree in reading or a Master’s degree with a reading endorsement.
  • Three (3) years of successful classroom teaching experience in which the teaching of reading was an important responsibility.
  • Knowledge of current research and best practices in the field of reading and writing.
  • Experience in computer technology or willing to pursue appropriate technology training as required by position.
  • Must demonstrate effective knowledge of and be sensitive to the needs of a diverse student population.
  • Ability to develop effective relationships with students, parents and school personnel.
 
ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES: (including but not limited to the following)
 
  • Complies with all school laws, State Board of Education regulations, and all policies and regulations made by the School Board and Superintendent.
  • Performs all duties deemed necessary by the School Board and Superintendent for the efficient and successful operation of the school system.
  • Assesses the reading strengths and needs of students, provide that information to parents and educational staff, and use the results to support the planning and implementation of an effective reading program for the students.
  • Coordinates the administration of literacy assessments, examine the use of data from the assessments, and monitor student progress.
  • Provides reading intervention to students who are struggling with reading.
  • Supports, supplements, and extends classroom teaching to implement a quality reading and writing program that meets the needs of students and works with teachers, support staff, and school administrators to facilitate the coordination of the reading and writing program within the total curriculum.
  • Leads professional development in literacy, provide information on literacy methodology, model strategies or techniques, conduct demonstration or collaborative lessons, and coach or mentor teachers.
  • Maintains an in-depth knowledge of the Virginia Standards of Learning curriculum standards in reading and writing.
  • Provides leadership and guidance in the diagnosis of reading problems and development of prescriptive remediation.
  • Maintains inventory of all reading materials, including specialized materials for testing and remediation.
  • Assists in the selection of textbooks and instructional materials for the reading curriculum in grades PreK-12.
  • Assists teachers and parents in understanding the nature of students’ reading problems and nature of prescribed remediation.
  • Assists regular classroom teachers, ELL teachers and special education teachers with the identification and implementation of effective reading strategies through staff development and modeling.
  • Assists in the development of Individualized Educational Plans based on diagnostic data for students in reading.
  • Coordinates staff development in reading for grades PreK-12 teachers.
  • Demonstrates professional growth and attends all meetings called or approved by the Superintendent and/or Principal.
  • Performs other related duties as may be assigned by the principal, to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
 
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
 
Must have the ability to effectively communicate and interact with other staff and the public through the
use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle, or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment such as, but not limited to, a personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. Some climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions will be required.
