POSITION INFORMATION:
 

Supervisor: Director of Special Education
Employment Period:  10 months
Employment Status:  Full-time
Salary: Teacher scale -- commensurate with experience
Start date: Immediately


SUMMARY:

Adapted physical education teachers are PE teachers who are trained to evaluate and assess motor competency, physical fitness, play, recreation, leisure and sports skills for students with disabilities. Adapted physical education teachers are then capable of developing and implementing an IEP program based on the findings of their assessment. Adapted physical education teachers must have knowledge and competencies in the following:
 
  • Developmental teaching methods in physical and motor fitness, fundamental motor skills and skills in individual sports and other activities, as well as group sports and games
  • Knowledge of motor control for teaching physical education to individuals with disabilities
  • Knowledge of developmental sequences and motor characteristics associated with a number of disabilities
  • Skills in a number of physical education techniques and procedures for developing individualized education programs in PE


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
 
  • Instructs students in adaptive physical education in accordance with the course of study adopted by the Board of Education.
  • Develops lessons appropriate to the needs and abilities of each assigned student.
  • Provides individual/small group instruction that meets desired goals and provides the best use of available class time in collaboration with the general education PE teacher.
  • Assists students with developing healthy lifestyle behaviors and social skills.
  • Identifies student needs and cooperates with other staff members in helping students solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
  • Uses a variety of instructional techniques appropriate for the ages and skill level of students.
  • Interprets the abilities and disabilities of students and works cooperatively with classroom teachers who have physically restricted/mentally challenged students in regular classes.
  • Evaluates student performance and prepares regular progress reports.
  • Assists with screening, evaluating and recommending services of students in the school’s adaptive physical education program.
  • Maintains thorough records for each student.
  • Selects, requisitions and maintains instructional materials and aids.
  • Conducts professional development opportunities for PE teachers.
  • Participates in IEP development meetings as indicated by building LEA.
  • Advise education professionals of students’ physical abilities or disabilities and the accommodations required to enhance their school performance.
  • Evaluate the motor needs of individual students to determine their needs for APE services.
  • Attends staff development programs, curriculum development meetings and other professional activities.
  • Keeps abreast of developments and research in the field of adapted physical education.
  • Performs any other related duties as assigned by the administrator.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:
 
  • Must possess or be eligible for a teaching license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia with an endorsement in Physical Education or completion of a bachelor's degree and additional coursework necessary to obtain a teaching license.  Preference given to those who have completed an approved teacher prep program.
  • Three years of teaching experience is preferred.
  • Experience designing programs for physically restricted/mentally challenged students preferred.
  • Must possess effective instructional delivery techniques and skills.
  • Must possess an in-depth knowledge in the areas of adaptive physical education, nutrition, weight management, physical fitness, stress management and adult health education.
  • Must possess knowledge of the needs of physically restricted/mentally challenged students.
  • Must possess the ability to instruct students in adaptive physical education.
  • Must possess excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school administrators, employees, parents and students.
  • Participation in the Adapted PE Content Teaching Academy (CTA) required. CAPE certification preferred but not required. Secure certification within two years.
