POSITION INFORMATION:

 

Supervisor:   Chief of Elementary School Leadership & Compensatory Programs
Employment Period:  12 months
Employment Status: Full-time
Salary (G-223): Commensurate with experience
Start Date: July 2024


SUMMARY:


Position is responsible for assisting in building the capacity of administrators to improve the conditions of teaching and learning in assigned elementary schools. The director will have decision making power to address day-to-day academic and operational school issues and will be responsible for ensuring the district’s mission and goals are achieved. Collaboration with multiple departments to ensure consistency of practice and use of resources will be essential as this position works continuously to improve the skills and knowledge base of elementary school administrators.



ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
 
  • Coaches and supports elementary administrators in goal setting, planning, development, implementation, and monitoring of action plans that will guide school leaders in meeting their instructional leadership objectives and for their schools to meet performance targets.                                                              
  • Plans and leads high quality and relevant learning experiences for elementary administrators to guide the implementation of effective instructional programs.
  • Conducts regular formal and informal classroom walk-throughs aligned to student achievement and strategic goals.
  • Provides feedback on successful leadership practices, such as effective management of instructional staff, use of data, and establishment of school culture.
  • Attends school-based meetings and events to foster a culture of engagement with staff, families, and community.
  • Responds to parent and community issues and concerns in an appropriate and timely manner.
  • Assists in the screening, interviewing, assigning, and evaluation of administrative personnel.
  • Assists in analyzing school/student achievement data to guide principals in developing strategies for improvement; includes the ongoing monitoring of School Improvement Plans and the participation in School Leadership Meetings
  • Builds the instructional leadership capacity of principals with particular focus on instruction, data analysis, aligned interventions, community, and culture.
  • Creates a culture of inquiry and mutual accountability among the elementary administrators.
  • Visits schools on a regular basis to monitor day-to-day operations.
  • Coordinates and supervises elementary summer school programs.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the Chief of  Elementary School Leadership and Compensatory Programs or other appropriate central office administrators.

OTHER DUTIES:
 
  • Initiates and maintains effective relationships with other school divisions and professional societies to maintain a current knowledge about comprehensive student support systems. 
  • Performs any other related duties as assigned by the Superintendent.



JOB REQUIREMENTS:
 
  • Must possess a Masters degree and hold or be eligible for a Virginia License in Administration and Supervision; Doctoral degree preferred.
  • At least three years of experience as an elementary school principal; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skill and abilities.
  • Must possess the ability to plan, organize, and direct a comprehensive program of student support.
  • Must have demonstrated instructional leadership that has brought about increased student achievement.
  • Must possess excellent leadership, supervisory, interpersonal, and communication skills. 
  • Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with parents/guardians, the community, and administrative staff. 
  • Must have skill in creating effective teams and assisting, developing and supporting staff as well as serving as a collaborative and contributing member of various assigned work teams. 
  • Must have the ability to set goals and long range plans for large programs and to review and evaluate the overall effectiveness of large programs.
  • Must have the ability to develop and administer system-wide budgets, policies and programs.
  • Must be able to develop policies, procedures and standards for services offered and the ability to accurately interpret state and federal regulations and school policies and their potential effects on student support systems. 
  • Must have a thorough knowledge of the cognitive, affective, social and physical development of school children, the organization and communication channels of public school systems, the principles of effective leadership and supervision, organization and administration.
