DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Administers the science program in accordance with Regulations and Virginia’s Standards of Accreditation
- Coordinates the development, implementation and evaluation of curricular materials K-12 and as well as Dual Enrollment and AP courses to include quarterly critical skills assessments for select grade levels/courses
- Analyzes science assessment data and uses information to determine the effectiveness of instructional methods and programs and drive recommended revisions and improvements
- Maintains an in-depth understanding of the Understanding by Design curriculum development process and ensures all written curriculum is developed using this framework
- Maintains an in-depth knowledge of the Virginia Standards of Learning to include the standards, curriculum frameworks, test blueprints, and all other relevant resources
- Develops, implements, maintains, and evaluates professional development opportunities for staff and teachers
- Visits schools and conducts walkthroughs on a regular basis to ensure consistency of the instructional program from classroom to classroom and school to school
- Assists teachers by modeling lessons or coaching on an as needed basis
- Supports school data teams and collaborates regarding instructional decisions based on the data
- Assists in preparation, implementation, and assessment of technical assistance plans
- Supervises and evaluates teacher specialists, coaches, and clerical staff
- Attends and leads professional development activities to include workshops and conferences to expand professional skills
- Oversees departmental budget
- Coordinates and facilitates textbook adoption committees
- Ensures classrooms and science labs meet and exceed state and OSHA regulations
- Prepares and maintains textbooks and other resources including lab inventories
- Coordinates meetings with specialists, instructional leaders, teachers, coaches and administrators and disseminates information regarding current developments in the field
- Coordinates division-wide science educational activities and events
- Serves as the central office contact and liaison with parents and the community regarding the division’s science instructional program
- Serves as division representative on a variety of committees at the state level
- Prepares division reports as required
- Prepares and presents to the School Board upon request
- Works in a collaborative manner with members of the HCS Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment Team
- Writes and implements state and federal grants that will further the development of HCS students, teachers and administrators
- Partners with the state and non-profit organizations to expand curriculum offerings for teachers and students
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
- Virginia Postgraduate Graduate Professional License with an endorsement that permits a candidate to teach science at one or more levels is required. The Administration and Supervision K-12 endorsement is required at the time of hire or within one calendar year
- Applicant must demonstrate the personal characteristics and leadership qualities necessary to work effectively with administrators, teachers, parents and students
- Demonstrated success in improving student achievement
