School Counselor at Coweta High School

Position Purpose 
A secondary school counselor is an integral and essential component of the school team.  The counselor is to provide a comprehensive, developmental program for students in grades 7-8.  The role of a counselor is to promote the academic success of all students and to encourage them to reach their highest potential.  The following is a summary of the many duties and services that are performed by the Counseling Department.
Contract: 190 days, 7 hours per day.
 
Major Job Responsibilities:

  • Be an advocate for all students, promoting positive attitudes and behavior, and treating all students fairly and consistently. 
  • Counsel small groups and individual students on their developmental level.
  • Help identify and resolve academic, attendance and behavior problems.
  • Help solve conflicts related to home and family relations, health and emotional adjustments, and grief and crisis counseling.
  • To provide counseling that will lead to personal growth, self-understanding, maturity and respect for other’s diversity.
  • Provide orientation for new students
  • Assist students, in consultation with their parents, regarding referrals to outside agencies.
  • Aid in child abuse identifications, reporting and referrals.
  • Interact with students, staff and parents in a positive and professional manner.
  • Maintain a pleasant and orderly office climate.
  • Establish rapport with students and provide a safe place for them to discuss personal problems.
  • Initiate, assemble and maintain records and professional standards regarding confidentiality.
  • Communicate with teachers and parents regarding student’s social, emotional, physical and intellectual needs. 
  • Advise administrators and faculty on matters of student conduct.
  • Participate in special consultations and case conferences with other student services personnel.
  • Handle referrals from teachers and parents.
 
  • Serve as a mediator for students, parents and teachers.
  • Serve on district committees as necessary.
  • Assist in Identifying students’ individual needs, strengths and areas for growth through the interpretation of appropriate and pertinent data.
  • Developing special programs and activities which address specific student needs. 
  • Monitoring student progress based on district and site goals.
  • Serve as test administrator/coordinator for various testing needs.
  • Follow school board policy and the Standards of Performance and Conduct per the Oklahoma State Department of Education, Professional Services Division.
  • Academic Advising
    • Coordinate and interpret state and district test results for students, parents and teachers.                                   
    • Complete reports required by school district and outside agencies
    • Update counseling materials and forms.
    • Facilitate transition between elementary, middle and high schools.
 
Additional Duties
Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

Equipment
Use standard office equipment such as; personal computers, printer, copy and fax machines, and telephone. 

Travel Requirements
Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required. 

Work Schedule
Standard teacher work schedule as set forth in the Teachers' Unit Contract. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of current art instructional teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiates instruction based upon student learning styles.
  • Knowledge of art curriculum and concepts.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
  • Ability to use computer network system and software applications as needed.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
  • Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.
 
Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards
Work in standard office and school building environments.

Certification/License:
  • Oklahoma State Certification as a Counselor.
  • Motor Vehicle Operator's License or ability to provide own transportation.
 
Education
  • Bachelors from an accredited college or university in education discipline applicable to teaching assignment.
 
Experience
Successful prior Counselor experience for the appropriate grade level and/or subject is a plus.
