Description

Nature of Position Provides support to the instructional process with specific responsibility for managing the placement of assigned students, providing information and recommendations to parents and students, and assisting in the development of goals and plans for achievement.
Education and Certification
Requirements
  • Master’s degree in School Counseling from an accredited college or university
  • Tennessee state certification as a Guidance Counselor; TN Endorsement Code: Counselor K-12, School Counselor PreK-12
Required Knowledge, Experience, and Skills
  • Knowledge of area, culture, and target population.
  • Experience as a school counselor or in a counseling-related field.
  • Knowledge of the stages of child development.
  • Ability to communicate and work with diverse individuals and groups.
  • Ability to apply assessment instruments; prepare and maintain accurate records; and gather, collate, analyze, and/or classify data.
  • Ability to plan and manage projects and schedule a significant number of activities, meetings, and/or events.
  • Ability to review and interpret highly technical information, write technical materials, and/or speak persuasively.
  • Ability to analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions.
  • Must be able to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances, as well as work independently to solve problems and create action plans.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Responds to student needs by implementing a comprehensive school counseling program addressing students' socio-emotional and academic development.
  • Counsels students and their guardians to enhance students’ well-being and academic, social, and emotional success in school.
  • Provides preventive services.
  • Develops special programs and classes to help students develop life and academic skills.
  • Coordinates with teachers, administrators, resource specialists and/or the community (e.g., service clubs, courts, child protective services, etc.) to share information and/or make recommendations.
  • Monitors students' progress to identify issues and take appropriate action for increasing student success.
  • Prepares materials to document activities, provide written references, and/or convey information.
  • Presents information for the purpose of communicating, gaining feedback, and ensuring adherence to established internal controls.
  • Supervises assigned programs (e.g., scholarships, peer counseling, special education, ESL, etc.) to monitor performance, provide for professional growth, and achieve overall curriculum objectives.
  • Travels to district buildings and professional meetings as required.
