What To Wear in Hawaii

The dress in Hawai’i is, for the most part, casual. Because of our year-round temperate weather only one wardrobe is generally needed. Men wear casual or dress slacks and aloha or polo shirts at work, church, and most functions. Shorts, swim trunks, and t-shirts will round out a man’s wardrobe. You can leave your suits, jackets, and ties at home for the most part. A light jacket would be a good idea for the winter. Muumuus, casual dress, skirts, and tops are the norm for women in Hawaii. Leisure activity wear includes shorts and swimsuits. Corporate America suits aren’t generally a part of life in Hawai’i but you will want jackets and sweaters for cool, breezy winter evenings.

Shopping for clothing doesn’t need to be a harrowing experience. We have many malls with national department stores such as Sears and Macy’s (the best sales are at Macy’s!) as well as Wal-Mart and many local discount stores. There is a great flea market at the Aloha Stadium on Oahu Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. You’ll find bargain prices on clothing as well as gift items. Because most of your wardrobe will be cotton, or at least machine washable, dry cleaning bills will be minimal if any.
