Life Skills Centers are public schools that serve students ages 16-22 who are at-risk or have had difficulty with the routine of traditional high school in the past.

We provide a safe, clean, interactive learning environment in which students learn from qualified teachers, utilizing hands-on training with the very latest in today's technology. Our unique curriculum combines academics, life skills preparation, and workplace training. And, when students successfully complete their individualized course of study at the Life Skills Center, they receive a state-recognized high school diploma.

Life Skills Centers have graduated thousands of students since the first school opened in 1999. We now have schools throughout the country, with plans to continue opening new schools both in Ohio and across the United States.

A Life Skills Center Reading Specialist has a variety of job duties, including coaching teachers on the implementation of evidence-based reading instructional practices to improve reading achievement at the school; providing high-level literacy support for members of the school community; working closely with the Curriculum Director, school Administrator, the Central Office Reading Coordinator/District Contact, teachers, and parents to accomplish the goals outlined in the charter proposal and contract; coaching classroom teachers on the implementation of core and intervention approaches for reading and the use of formative assessment data as the basis for instructional decision making; establishing and overseeing a peer mentoring support network for teachers as they implement recommended instructional practices; leading and coordinating the seven member school assessment team; helping to administer the MRFP screening, progress monitoring, diagnostic, and outcomes measures; meeting regularly with the Central Office Reading Coordinator/District Contact, Administrator, and others to assess the progress of the implementation of the Reading Program and to modify elements as necessary; and assisting in the analysis of school-wide literacy strengths and weaknesses and formulate plans to improve student achievement in reading and teaching effectiveness. Other job duties will be required as the position demands.

Qualifications    • Masters in Reading, Education, Special Education, or related field or Reading Endorsement.
• Three to five years prior teaching experience, experience with secondary preferred; preference for individuals with experience in varied positions, including reading teacher and classroom teacher.
• Valid FL Reading Specialist certification preferred and/or Endorsement required by September 2007, in the interim, valid FL teacher certification wit documented reading coursework required.
• An additional discipline in Language Arts or other is a plus.
• Experience and skill as a coach or mentor for adults on literacy related topics.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Deep understanding of evidence-based reading research and practices for teaching reading and assessing student progress toward achievement of benchmarks as documented in coursework and experience as a teacher of reading.
Cert Req    General area "Reading Specialist", which would be one or more of the following: Reading Specialist (K-5), Reading Specialist (6-8), or Reading Specialist (9-12).
