Description

Position Summary: English Tutors provide individual and small group tutoring in English in an online setting. The tutor facilitates learning as a guide and coach to assist the student to become a successful, independent learner. The purpose of tutoring is to increase and enhance mastery of concepts or applications of specific courses of study. Tutors integrate effective study and learning strategies to maximize the student’s potential for academic progress.

As a member of the Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment team, tutors are expected to remain current on courses and/or subjects in which their students are enrolled and seeking tutoring. For example, tutors of the English sequence should be familiar with the assignments and test dates.

Primary duties and responsibilities:

· Tutor students in specific course material and/or skill areas; integrate study and learning strategies to promote independent learning.

· Meet with your Supervisor and Administration to establish personal goals for yourself as a tutor and monitor progress on personal goals.

· Meet with your Supervisor and Administration regularly to discuss your role as a tutor and obtain any information that will assist you to effectively tutor students.

· Participate in the required tutor training.

· Make appropriate referrals to other POHS or POMS resources and inform your Supervisor and Administration of any referral.

· Other duties as assigned (may include helping with tasks in the Instruction and Assessment departments).

Skills/Abilities: A tutor must demonstrate the ability to:

· Quickly establish rapport and communicate well with a diverse student body.

· Maintain patience as they support and guide students toward success.

· Demonstrate competency in subjects they are going to tutor (i.e. earn a 3.0 GPA or better in the skill area, teaching or tutoring experience, etc.).

· Troubleshoot basic technological problems

· Maximize their schedule to effectively help the most students.

· Collect and analyze student data to inform tutoring and professional development needs

Education/Training:

The ideal candidate would be a College student, English major, with 3.0 or higher GPA, seeking full time (32 hours and above) employment. In addition:

· Work on-site, in office, between the hours of 8 AM and 7 PM. Scheduling may vary.

· Must have current Arizona fingerprint clearance card.

· Master concepts from Middle School and High School English or higher,

· Excellent customer service skills.

· Patience.

· Ability to “meet students at their level” and explain concepts step by step.

· Technology Savvy.

· Teaching or Tutoring experience.

· Immediate availability required; long term commitment preferred.
