Description

Position Purpose

Under the direct supervision of a certified staff member, to assist certified professional staff with students in the classroom to meet instructional goals and objectives, and to free certified professional employees from non-professional duties such as proctoring study halls to enable them to make a contribution to other aspects of the educational program, such as curriculum development.

Salary: $19,675.00 - $33,099.00 (Commensurate with Experience)

Essential Job Functions

Depending upon the classroom assignment, the Instructional Assistant/Paraprofessional will:

  • Assists and guides students to reinforce reading, language arts, mathematics, computer instruction, and other skills. 
  • Works with students individually and in small groups to reinforce basic learning and implement assigned programs. Work with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce learning of material or skills. Teach small groups using materials (adapted to a specific group) in different parts of the room on in different locations around the school.
  • Assists professional staff in the administration and correction of classroom exercises, tests and assessments.
  • Assists in classroom preparations and strategies for reinforcing instructional materials and skills according to individual student needs.
  • Assists with record-keeping procedures to document student learning and performance.
  • Assists with classroom behavioral management to minimize disruptions, ensure a safe and orderly classroom, and ensure students are on task.
  • Assists students in non-instructional areas, such as supervising the student lunch programs, bus duty, playground duty, corridor, study hall, and other related non-instructional areas.
  • Accompanies students on field trips for the purpose of assisting with supervision.
  • Constructs, copies and distribute and use educational materials as needed.
  • Assists teacher with parent contact as requested to foster effective and participatory parent involvement in student education.
  • Assists students with special needs in all aspects of classroom instruction to maximize inclusion, learning, achievement if IEP objectives, etc.
  • Participates in IEP process and serves as resource for the student personnel evaluation team as needed.
  • Assist students with physical or mental disabilities with activities of daily living for the purpose of maximizing their ability to participate in school or learning activities.
  • Follows all applicable safety rules, procedures and regulations governing the proper manner of assistance for all students, including those with disabilities or other special needs.
  • Implement lesson plans designed by the teacher.
  • Provide supplemental instruction in complementary skills.
  • Support instruction by monitoring students, answering questions, checking and correcting students’ answers, etc.
  • Support instruction by writing, modeling, or demonstrating with the use of concrete examples for students to understand.
  • Team teaches with the teacher when appropriate.
  • Assist the teacher in devising special strategies for reinforcing academic material and behavioral skills based on a sympathetic understanding of individual students, their needs, interests, and abilities.
  • Guide independent study, enrichment work, and remedial work.
  • Assist with such large group activities as drill work, reading aloud, and story-telling.
  • Read to students, listen to students read, and participate in other forms of oral communication with students.
  • Assist with the supervision of students during lunch periods, emergency drills, assemblies, play periods, and field trips.
  • Assist students in the library media center, computer lab, etc.
  • Check notebooks, correct papers, and supervise testing and make-up work.

Perform clerical tasks such as:

  • Checking and recording student attendance.
  • Collecting and recording collection of money.
  • Distributing and collecting workbooks, papers, and other materials for instruction.
  • Operating and caring for equipment used in the classroom for instructional purposes.
  • Keeping bulletin board and other classroom learning displays up-to-date.
  • Making copies of needed instructional worksheets.
  • Assist students with physical, personal, behavioral, health, and transportation needs.
  • Participate in in-service training with as required.
  • Maintain high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students, faculty, and school business
  • Perform other duties as assigned by building administrators, teacher or director. ?

Additional Duties:

  • Assist guidance, pupil services staff or building administration, as needed.
  • Perform any other related duties as assigned.

-  Travel between schools, or between schools and central offices, may be required for certain positions.

  • Ability to understand, apply and use personal computers and software applications (e.g., Word, Excel).

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of information regarding students, employees and others.
  • Ability to establish a supportive and compassionate relationship with students with special needs.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff and others contacted in the course of work.
  • Ability to report work orally or in writing to supervisor as required.
  • Effective writing and verbal communication skills.

  • Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time.
  • Exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone, to enter data into a computer.
  • See and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids.
  • Hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels, outdoors and on the telephone.
  • Speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in normal classrooms, outdoors, and on the telephone.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 25 pounds, bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, walk and reach overhead.

Qualifications Profile

 

• Must have completed at least 60 semester hours of college credit or earned an associates or higher degree or successfully passed the ParaPro Praxis Assessment (Virginia qualifying score of 455) • Demonstrate ability to work independently and as part of a team • Ability to work under the supervision of the teacher, including following lesson plans prepared by teachers • Ability to work effectively with individual children and small groups, meeting the instructional objectives as established by the teacher • Physical ability to lift, position, and assist students as required  •Prior experience working with special needs children desirable.
