POSITION:  Bus Driver
 
Salary/Hours: 
 
  • Pay: Non-exempt - $18.00 per hour
  • Position Length: 186 days
  • Hours: To be set in conjunction with the Director of Transportation
                                      
JOB SUMMARY:

The Bus Driver transports students over scheduled routes and/or to/from special excursions; ensures vehicle is in safe operating condition; and ensures safety of students during transport, loading and unloading from buses. This job reports to the Director of Transportation.
 
REQUISITE EDUCATION AND SKILLS:
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years driving experience with a valid driver’s license required.
  • Must pass a Department of Transportation physical, drug and alcohol testing, and a tuberculosis test.
  • A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualification.
  • Must be able to speak, read, write, and understand English, Spanish language proficiency a plus.
  • Requires a valid Virginia Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with a school bus endorsement issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Able to meet all driving record, physical, CPR certification requirements, drug/alcohol testing and background investigations that are required by the Manassas Park City Schools and the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Knowledge of traffic laws and regulations including street and railroad-crossing procedures.

  • Able to do moderate lifting and assist students on and off the bus, if needed.
  • Able to be patient and understanding with children while maintaining order and discipline on the bus.
  • Able to stay calm in emergencies.
  • Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school officials, co-workers, parents, and students.
  • Willing and able to work 6:00am-8:45am and 1:15pm-4:30pm every school day
ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES: (including but not limited to the following)
  • Transports passengers over scheduled routes to and from school and/or field trips in a safe and timely manner.
  • Monitors students and other passengers during transit to maintain safety and follow district policy.
  • Performs pre-trip and post-trip inspections (e.g. fluid levels, tire pressure, exterior condition, mirrors, etc.) to ensure the safe operating condition of the vehicle and comply with mandated guidelines.
  • Advises students and other passengers of appropriate behavior to reinforce regulations and maintain passenger safety.
  • Assesses incidents, complaints, accidents and/or potential emergency situations (e.g. road hazards, medical emergencies, accidents, etc.) and resolves and/or recommends a resolution to the situation.
  • Assists students and other passengers in safe loading and unloading from buses during both emergency situations and normal transport.
  • Attends meetings, classroom and behind the wheel training, safety meetings, in service, administrative conferences, etc. to maintain skills and meet the certificate requirements of a school bus driver.
  • Conducts emergency evacuation drills to ensure efficiency of procedures and comply with mandated requirements.
  • Responds to inquiries (e.g. students, parents, other school personnel, etc.) to provide information and/or direction.
  • Secures students as assigned (e.g. car seats, wheelchairs, restraints, etc.) to ensure their safety during transport.
  • Assists children with disabilities on and off the bus.
  • Assists with snow removal on/around buses to ensure buses maintain established schedules.
  • Cleans assigned vehicles, both interior and exterior to ensure safety, appearance, and sanitation of vehicle.
  • Lifts student and/or equipment (e.g. wheelchairs, car seats, restraints, seat belts, etc.) to position or reposition students as appropriate.
  •  Responsible for the safe transportation of students on the bus by having full knowledge of defensive driving techniques and a complete understanding of the laws of the road
  • Maintains awareness of student safety always and maintains order and discipline on the bus by giving referrals and bus conduct reports to school principals
  • Assists other drivers in the transportation of students or covering other runs as needs arise
  • Before first bus run of the day, performs required walk-around inspection of the bus and reports all problems to the Fleet Maintenance Coordinator

  • Performs routine operator care of the bus to include refueling, checking oil, washing the bus, sweeping and keeping interior of the bus clean, checking equipment and reporting defects; takes the bus for regularly scheduled maintenance
  • Monitors road conditions and reports any safety issues to the Transportation Coordinator
  • Communicates via two-way radio with Transportation Coordinator, schools and other bus drivers as required
  • Attends all required meetings pertaining to the position and submits all daily reports as requested by Transportation Coordinator
  • Reports all bus accidents immediately to local police and Transportation Coordinator and assists students as needed
  • When assigned daily, overnight or weekend field trips, driver is responsible for directions to location, parking and safety of bus while away and conducting oneself in a proper manner while representing the school system
  • Performs other duties as assigned
 
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
 
Must have the ability to effectively communicate and interact with other staff and the public through the
use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle, or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment such as, but not limited to, a personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. Some climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions will be required.
