Job Title: CTE Business Teacher
Supervisor: Principal
Contract Length: 200 Days
Job Classification: Exempt
 
Job Summary
Position is responsible for developing students' skills and competence in computer technology, keyboarding, word processing, spreadsheet, database, graphics, and telecommunications applications; to provide knowledge needed to develop practical computer and business skills for personal use or for use in a business occupation.
 
Essential Duties
The minimum performance expectations include, but are not limited to, the following functions/tasks:

  1. Develops and administers business and information technology education curriculum consistent with school district goals and objectives.
  2. Promotes a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small group instruction, and student learning.
  3. Develops lesson plans and instructional materials for subject area, and translates lesson plans into learning experiences to develop pertinent sequential assignments, challenge students, and best utilize the available time for instruction.
  4. Teaches knowledge and skills in basic business and information technology principles.
  5. Designs learning activities to demonstrate the application of business and information technology principles to everyday existence and problem-solving.
  6. Conducts ongoing assessment of student learning and progress, and modifies instructional methods to fit individual student's needs, including students with special needs; conducts individual and small group instruction as needed.
  7. Maintains familiarity with district, Virginia State standardized tests and CTE program objectives and goals for the purpose of adapting curriculum to maximize student achievement on such tests.
  8. Continues to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops or professional meetings, or by conducting research.
  9. Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievement and attendance as required by district procedures and applicable laws.
  10. Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students and parents.
  11. Ensures that student conduct conforms to the school's standards and school district policies, and establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
  12. Coordinates with other professional staff members, especially within grade level, and participates in faculty meetings and committees.
  13. Selects and requisitions appropriate books, instructional aids and other supplies and equipment and maintains inventory records.
Other Duties
  1. Maintains professional competence by attending staff development programs, curriculum development meetings and other professional activities.
  2. Participates in various student and parent activities which occur in school including PTA, student clubs and afterschool activities.
  3. Creates an effective learning environment through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards, and activity/learning centers.
  4. Performs any other related duties as assigned by the Principal or other appropriate administrator aligned with the mission and vision of Essex County Public Schools.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities Required)
Must possess a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in education or a related field. Must be eligible or possess Virginia Collegiate Professional License or Postgraduate Professional License with appropriate endorsement to teach Business and Information Technology; this position requires industry certification.  Must possess ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, & the public.
 
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone, to enter data into a computer; to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels, outdoors and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in normal classrooms, outdoors and on the telephone; physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds; to bend, stoop, climb stairs, and reach overhead.

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Duties may be occasionally performed on field trips away from school. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
